Birthing Suite at North Carolina Birth Center in Chapel Hill
In the past decade, I’ve seen birth centers open and close throughout the state. Many community members continue to grieve the closing of Women’s Birth & Wellness Center in Chapel Hill, which was an anchor in the birth community for 25 years. Other centers closed across the state during COVID. Fortunately, the Triangle is seeing new options for birthing folks seeking out of hospital birth and those options include more homebirth CNM’s operating in the area, in addition to the birth centers listed below.

Aya Birth & Community Wellness in Durham opened in 2024 and has as its core mission to create a culture of community-centered maternal and reproductive health care for people of color in North Carolina. Aya is North Carolina’s first Black-owned Birth and Wellness Center. Aya offers open access maternity care, family building/fertility services, and well person care in addition to delivering at the Birth House (with the option of water birth). Aya is now accepting Medicaid. Transferring hospital is Durham Regional.
With over 25 years in women’s health, Tina Braimah, MSN, CNM, CPM, is the founder and Executive Director of Aya Birth & Community Welleness, the only CABC accredited, Black-midwife led birth center in NC. She is a midwife, herbalist and advocate for BIPOC birthing people. Tina is a leading voice for reproductive justice and birth equity.

Haven Birth Suite in Cary
Haven Women’s Health & Birth Center in Cary opened its doors in 2024. Haven has spacious birth suites with birth tubs and large walk in showers. Haven offers a full range of women’s health services and their model of care prioritizes taking the time with patients to listen, assess their needs and educate them on options. The birth center also offers community classes in their event room and has a small kitchen for birth partners and staff to use during their stay. Haven offers classes through community partners for their clients. Transferring hospital is WakeMed Cary or optional transfer to other local hospitals.
Owner, Sara Fawson, CEO, DNP, CNM, WHNP-BC, has worked in women's health and birth care in the Triangle, NC area since 2018.
Haven is proud to offer the following amenities:
A queen-size bed to help you find comfortable positions during labor, and so the whole family can cuddle up once baby arrives.
Music and lighting: Connect to our Bluetooth speakers and control the lighting in your room to create a soothing environment that works for you.
Extra-large shower can be used for aqua therapy during labor.
Safety equipment: It is there, but it’s not the focal point of the room; it includes medications, oxygen, IVs, and emergency supplies if needed.
Room to move: Eat what you want, wear what you want, and bring who you want.
Pain management options: Nitrous oxide, TENS unit, birthing balls, aromatherapy, and many more options to help you feel comfortable during labor.
Hydrotherapy / Birth Tub: A deep soaking tub that eases pain and relaxes tension.
Japanese toilet with heated seat and built-in bidet are in every birth suite.
